Shakespeare's 449th Birthday, Aprl 23rd, 2013

Born April 23rd, 1564, this amazing writer and poet is still famous in 2013.

Shane Koyczan, Canadian Performance Poet - Olympic Level!

 

Poetry makes me think.  Poetry makes me feel all sorts of emotions.  Poetry tantalizes my senses.  And sometimes poetry stops me - dead in my tracks.

Shane Koyczan, Canadian performance poet, did just that to me the night of the Olympic opening ceremonies, Vancouver.  Sample "We Are More" - a proud Canadian tribute. 

 

Note - Shane also writes a lot of poetry about bullying.  While his content is moving and thought provoking, the language content is for an older audience and not suitable for younger audiences.

              classes

Using visuals from her wildlife and nature books, Deborah describes the process of creating a nonfiction book — from idea, to research and writing, editing, art and design. She also shares amazing facts about wildlife, discusses animal adaptations and brings animal furs and skulls to show the students. Deborah talks about other books she’s written, too.

"DON’T GIVE A MAGNET TO AN ELEPHANT"
Don’t give a magnet to an elephant.
He won’t handle it with care.
He’ll hold it high up in the sky
and pull planes out of the air.
He’ll get it stuck to delivery trucks
and bicycles and trains.
He’ll cause trouble at construction sites
by sticking to the cranes.
He’ll magnetize the city—
every car, bus, van and truck.

Peter Joynt, Canadian Rapper

"The Joynt"





Peter Joynt – a musician, producer and mc from Ottawa, Canada. The Joynt has been rhyming for over a decade. He is known for his distinctively strong style and energetic live show. His writing is smart and largely conscious, while his music reflects tones of underground hip-hop. One intriguing fact about Peter is that he stutters quite noticeably in conversation, yet it disappears when he performs. It’s one of the many interesting characteristics that make him a force to watch in Canadian Hip-Hop.



The Joynt made waves in November 2011, when he released the single Capcity – a love song about Ottawa. The video went viral and landed Peter on the front page of the Ottawa Citizen. The news story was broadcast nationwide on radio and television, and brought considerable attention to the Joynt’s music. He has since worked on projects for organizations like the Ottawa Senators and has performed for distinguished individuals such as the Governor General of Canada. Be sure to check out his latest release Self-Sampled, available on iTunes.



Peter graduated from Carleton University in 2004, where he completed an arts degree in Economics. He currently works in communications for the IT company Innovapost, and devotes his spare time to writing music. Peter is also involved in the community. He devotes time to various community events and speaks regularly to kids at local schools about rapping, stuttering, and bullying.
