Festival du Livre, French Book Fair, Oct 13, 14, 16

Happy Thanskgiving to all!  I gave up on blogging over the summer due to traveling in Central & Eastern Canada & poor wifi. And then once out of the routine, I found it hard to make the time again. I've probably lost some readership though, so here's my attempt to get our online learning community going again. Respond below or drop me an email to motivate me & remind me that an actual audience exits "out there!"

It's All About Reading! Keep those brains reading and learning this summer.

Don't let those reading levels fall over the summer!  Keep reading for a minimum of 15 mins per day and you will stay at the same level and probably improve.

READING TIP:
READING is the most important subject in school. Why?
Because a child needs reading in order to master most of the other
subjects. It’s extremely difficult to do word problems in math if you can’t read the words. How can you answer the questions in social studies or science if you can’t read and understand the textbook? If it’s so important,
how does a child “get good at it”? READ!

Tip by Jim Trelease author of The Read Aloud Handbook, New York Times best seller.

Ms. Murrells-Allaway recommends reading a minimum of 15 minutes EVERY DAY!  And of course try to read longer.

"All About Them Books" - Return those library books ASAP!

Scrumptious books are just part of what makes a library a yummy place, BUT, we must have that learning commons in tip-top shape to make it work well.  Thus, return all of your books, and pay for lost items (see me if we need a new plan).  See below for teacher-librarian's Mary Evelyn Smith's creative way to remind students to return their books

Sidewalk versus Street Riding
The safest place for bicycle riding is on the street, where bicycles are expected to follow the same rules of the road as motorists and ride in the same direction.
  • Children less than 10 years old, however, are not mature enough to make the decisions necessary to safely ride in the street.
  • Children less than 10 years old are better off riding on the sidewalk.
  • For anyone riding on a sidewalk:
    • Check the law in your province or jurisdiction to make sure sidewalk riding is allowed.
    • Watch for vehicles coming out of or turning into driveways.
    • Stop at corners of sidewalks and streets to look for cars and to make sure the drivers see you before crossing.
    • Enter a street at a corner and not between parked cars. Alert pedestrians that you are near by saying, “Excuse me,” or, “Passing on your left,” or use a bell or horn.

SPCA Kids Club Prize Give Away, "Be Kind to Animals Month"

Kids Club Prize Giveaway

One of the perks of BC SPCA Kids Club membership? Prize giveaways!

CatboyTo thank BC SPCA Kids Club members for their commitment to helping animals, they are holding a draw this month to give away a personal copy of Catboy by Eric Walters, donated by Orca Book Publishers. Catboy is featured in the spring issue of Bark! as one of their recommended books for Be Kind to Animals Month

Catboy tells the story of Taylor, who has recently moved from a small northern town to the big city of Toronto. Everything in the city is new to Taylor, including the colony of feral cats – cats living wild without guardians – he discovers when taking a shortcut through the junkyard with his new friend, Simon. When a new condominium development threatens the cats’ survival, Taylor vows to come up with a solution. Can Taylor and his friends save the cats in time?

If you’re not yet a Kids Club member, you still have a chance at the prize. Sign up by May 15 and you will be entered, along with all current Kids Club members, to win!
