NATURE

A Haiku by Ms. Blair (April, 2016)
Dirt, water and sun
Fun playing in the garden
Flowers make it nice

A Haiku by Ms. Blair (April, 2016)
Therapy of quiet song
Feel the breeze and warmth of sun
Gardening the soul.

A Haiku by Monsieur Lazar (April, 2016)
Mount Ida rises,
Majestic in the morning,
Turned pink by the sun.

A Haiku by Mr. Jakobsen (April, 2016)
Rich soil brown, fertile
Warms sunshine warms the cold ground
Time to sow the field

A Haiku by Mr. Jakobsen (April, 2016)
Dandelions bloom
Pastures dotted in yellow
Spring in the meadow

"Night" by Jasmine, grade 4 (April, 2016)
As I watch the stars come out,
Set a-glow with light, I always
Watch the secrets of the night.
The moon takes its place in the depths of the sky,
While the sun goes to sleep,
Saying good-bye.

"Nature" Rachel, Grade 5, 2014, Parkview
Whispering waters and lapping waves,
Silent fog and shadowed graves,
Swaying trees and dew-covered grass,
Scampering mice and prowling cats.
It is on this one dark night when all is still,
The air always seems to carry a chill.
It is always on this one night …
Halloween is full of fright.

“Colours of The Meadows” by Kate, grade 5, Feb., 2016
Rainbows bloom throughout the meadows;

each petal has its say.
Some will fall and some will stay,
but the smartest one will flow
with the wind.

“Full Moon on Mirror Lake” Constance Levy (Imagery)
Tonight

on this still,
smooth lake
high
in its forest place
the wandering,
wondering moon
becomes acquainted

with his face.

John Frank’s collection A Chill in the Air: Nature Poems of Fall and Winter

“Thief” (metaphor)
The winter’s wind is a clever thief:
He’ll join with you in play,
Then slip his hands inside your coat

And steal the warmth away”

SPRING
“Blossoms Are Here” by Maya, grade 2, 2014, Parkview
Spring smells freshly.
Baby birds singing in the forest
Colourful flowers all around me,

sunny skies up above.

“A Wish” Tim Meyers Dark Sparkle Tea and Other Bedtime Stories (strong rhythm)
I wish I could see,
as night comes on,
how the deer who hide

all day long
are not so shy
when shadows come,
hungry enough
not to turn and run,
but step from the trees,
nervous and peering -

the lower their heads

and feed in the clearing

BULLYING

“It’s NOT Cool” by Camryn and Brooklyn, grade 5, Feb, 2016
Bullying is not cool.
It’s actually quite cruel.
Calling names and laughing out loud,
Taking and breaking,
i want to say Go Away!
But I’m scared.
What would they do?

They could hurt my sister too.
Scared, alone, no clue what to do.
The bell has gone; I’m headed home.
Yet not alone.
Should I tell?

So I’ve told my mom.
She has taken care of the bullying.
At last it has stopped.
I’m having fun at school now,
and people actually think I’m
Pretty cool!

POETRY FORMS:

SHAPE POEMS
Toasting Marshmallows: Camping Poems Kristine O’Connell George (Shape Poems)
“Tent”
First
smooth dirt.
No rocks or roots.
Next, sharp stakes, poles,
strong nylon rope.  Shake, snap.
Billow, whoof settle.  Tug.  Pull taut.
Our tent is up.  Blooming, bright orange.

LIMERICKS

A remarkable man of Bound Brook
Likes to hang up his coat on a hook,
But what makes him of note
Is he keeps on his coat
While he dangles, absorbed in a book.

FREE VERSE (no end rhyme but internal rhyme)
“He” a riddle describing a Fox by Joyce Sidman in Butterfly Eyes and Other Secrets of the Meadow
He
trots
through
meadow-gold grass
in Dawn sun
furred
mysterious
a word
hunting
its own
meaning
Who is he?

  2. Thanks Bryn for adding your poem below:

    Spring
    Flowers bloom,
    Spring is here!
The wind now blows in my hair.
    Say good-bye to winter!
    Grass grows, snow melts.
    The rain falls,
    leaves blow.
    Can't wait for summer!
